IRWIN QUICK-GRIP 36" Heavy-Duty Bar Clamp & Reversible Spreader Bar
$59.99
- CLAMP AND SPREADER IN ONE: The jaw reverses so this heavy-duty bar clamp becomes a spreader bar that pushes the sling rails apart to tension your new sling while you bolt the frame back together.
- ONE-HANDED OPERATION: Squeeze the trigger to spread the rails while your other hand lines up the bolts and tension rod. No cranking, no extra set of hands needed.
- 36" CAPACITY FOR PATIO FRAMES: Opens up to 36 inches, wide enough to span the sling rails on dining chairs, high-back chairs, chaise lounges and ottomans.
- HEAVY-DUTY 600-LB RATED: Reinforced I-beam bar resists bowing and twisting, and POWER LOCKS hold the rails apart while you work. A quick-release trigger lets go smoothly when you're done.
- FRAME-FRIENDLY PADS: Non-marring jaw pads protect powder-coated aluminum finishes, so you can spread and clamp without scratching your furniture.
Why it helps with sling replacement
Replacement slings are cut slightly narrower than the frame on purpose, so they stretch tight once tension is applied. That means the hardest part of the job is spreading the sling rails far enough apart to bolt the frame back together and get the top tension rod in. This clamp in spreader mode holds the rails apart for you, so you can line everything up and tighten it down. It makes re-slinging even a single chair easier. For a whole set (4 or more slings), see our 4-ton hydraulic frame spreader kit.
How to use it to change a sling
-
Set it up as a spreader. Slide the bar through the handle so it sticks out the back, then reinstall the end jaw facing outward, so the jaws push apart instead of squeezing together.
-
Remove the old sling. Cut the old sling down the center lengthwise with scissors, then slide the fabric and spline out through the bottom of the frame.
-
Open up the frame. Take out the top bar of the chair, then remove the screws or bolts from one side of the chair frame so that side separates from the rest of the frame.
-
Slide in the new sling. Slide the new sling into the track on the side that's still attached, then into the track on the side you unbolted. Keep the spline in the fabric as you feed it, and line the sling up with the top and bottom of the rails. A second set of hands helps, and a little Windex sprayed along the track makes it slide easier.
-
Spread the rails. Lay the chair on its side on a sturdy, padded workbench. Place the clamp between the sling rails and squeeze the trigger to spread them apart and add tension to the sling.
-
Bolt it back together. With the rails spread, put the screws or bolts back in without fully tightening them, install the top tension rod, then tighten everything down and press the quick-release to remove the clamp.
-
Finish up. Trim any excess spline with snips and put the end caps back on the sling rails.
Tip: Spread the rails gently and only as far as you need. Aluminum frames flex, but over-spreading can bend them. Watch our sling installation video to see each step.
